Study Examines American Philanthropic Support for Israel

Wednesday, September 17th, 2008 |

A landmark report released yesterday, “Philanthropic Support for Israel’s Nonprofit Organizations by U.S. Donors,” shows that American philanthropic support to nonprofits in Israel continues to rise and that more American philanthropic dollars directed to Israel are being targeted by donors to specific organizations.

The EHL Consulting Group in a release said that it examined the patterns of charitable giving for a representative group of eighty Israel-based nonprofits during the period of 2001-2006 in four discrete sectors: Arts & Culture; Education; Health, Hospitals & Diseases; and Human Services. The sectors are included as several of the ten “traditional” categories established by the Giving USA Foundation and the Center for Philanthropy at Indiana University. The Giving USA Foundation and the Center for Philanthropy at Indiana University publish Giving USA, the yearbook that reports annual giving in the United States. Giving USA 2008 showed that Americans gave more than $306 billion to nonprofit organizations in 2007, an increase of $11 billion reported in 2006.

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008 |

The U.S. bishops asked the U.S. government to lift its ban on remittances and travel to Cuba, even temporarily, in light of the crisis caused by recent hurricanes. The request was made in a September 10 letter from Cardinal Francis George, OMI, president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, to President George Bush.

Francis Cardinal George, OMI, Archbishop of Chicago wrote “In light of the devastation and humanitarian disaster caused by recent hurricanes in Cuba and the efforts of extended families, friends and organizations to reach those in need, I urge you to suspend — even temporarily — Treasury and Commerce Department restrictions and licensing requirements for humanitarian travel and remittances by American citizens and assistance by not-for-profit organizations.’

Monday, August 18th, 2008 |

The White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives and CaliforniaVolunteers hosted a Partnership Summit to Strengthen Communities in Sacramento, highlighting ways to strengthen and expand partnerships between government and California’s nonprofit sector to more effectively address human need. Hosted by White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives Director Jay Hein and California Secretary of Service and Volunteering Karen Baker, the Summit recognized the vital role of California faith-based and community organizations and their volunteers in tacking critical community challenges from crime and prisoner reentry to disaster recovery, HIV/AIDS and homelessness.

“The President’s Faith-Based and Community Initiative is alive in California through the hundreds of nonprofits partnering with government to further their compassionate missions,” said White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives Director Jay Hein. “Effective and engaged volunteers are critical to the community impact of America’s faith-based and community organizations. In partnership with CaliforniaVolunteers, we honor the service of volunteers and the organizations through which they serve - those first in and last out in times of need - and seek ways to further extend their efforts to target stubborn social ills.”

Churches must spread the importance of child grants

Thursday, August 14th, 2008 |

Churches must assist government to emphasise the importance of child grants to young women in their communities, says North West MEC for Social Development, Nikiwe Mangqo. The MEC was speaking on Wednesday at the three-day Faith Based Organisation Summit held at Rustenburg Kloof.

MEC Mangqo appealed to churches to spread the message that child grants were not a means to earn an income but an intervention by the government to assist people who could not afford the basic necessities because of poverty.

Economic Downturn Takes Toll on Charitable Giving Among Christian Community

Wednesday, June 18th, 2008 |

Nearly half of the Christian adults in America have reduced their charitable giving because of the economic downturn, according to a recent Wilson Research Strategies survey commissioned by Dunham+Company.

“This study shows that the sharp rise in fuel costs has already begun to impact giving by Christians who are the backbone of philanthropy in America,” said Rick Dunham, president and CEO of Dunham+Company, which specializes in fundraising for Christian ministries. “Christian nonprofits need to understand that now, more than ever, it’s crucial to be proactive in communicating the importance of their mission and their organizational effectiveness to their donors in order to sustain the same share of donor dollars that are becoming more scarce.”

The Need to Give Applies to Nonprofits Too

Saturday, June 7th, 2008 |

American consumers continue to gather for themselves at an incredible rate. As a result, Americans cannot contain all they own in their own homes. In a recent Slate Magazine article entitled “Self-Storage Nation,” Tom Vanderbilt reports “… the storage industry now exceeds the revenues of Hollywood. One in 11 American households owns self-storage space.” Americans continue to gather for themselves, pay to store their possessions, and rarely or never visit their storage units after filling them.

This trend of accumulating versus giving is not surprising to Doug Pillsbury, Vice President of Transformational Giving at Mission Increase Foundation. “This accumulation of stuff does not actually make consumers happier.” Pillsbury observes.
