Martin Chemnitz Press Releases New Edition of Catholic, Lutheran, Protestant

Martin Chemnitz Press has released a new edition of Catholic, Lutheran, Protestant, A Comparison of Three Christian Confessions, by Gregory L. Jackson. The book emerged from an adult class for Lutherans married to Roman Catholics. Distributed by Christian News, Northwestern Publishing House, among others, the book sold out the first printing.

Jackson earned a Ph.D. in theology at the University of Notre Dame, studying with such famous theologians as Stanley Hauerwas (now at Duke University), Frank and Elisabeth Schussler-Fiorenza (both on the faculty at Harvard), and the late John Howard Yoder. He also earned a Master’s degree from Yale University, under Nils A. Dahl, Paul L. Holmer, and Abraham Malherbe. He has served Lutheran congregations as a Pastor since 1973, attending Catholic, Lutheran, and Protestant religious conferences.

The book addresses the main areas of Christian doctrine in three main divisions. The first section of the book concerns areas of agreement among all three groups. The second shows where there is partial agreement. The final section discusses complete disagreement on such topics as the papacy, doctrines about Mary, and Purgatory. The strength of the book comes from the author’s research into what each confession has written about its own beliefs. Catholic, Lutheran, Protestant is full of verbatim quotations from many different sources.

To help congregations study the issues, Martin Chemnitz Press has created a free PDF to download from Lulu and will provide a free leader’s guide for the book as a PDF download. The author’s website will also provide copies.
