We know this subject has been much debated in a number of web posts so we’ll try not to whine too much.
Apple iPhone 6 vs Samsung Galaxy S4, Sony Xperia Z, HTC One, BlackBerry 10
First of all, I’ve been an iPhone user for quite a while now, from the original iPhone all the way up the the iPhone 4S.
It’s been a good ride, early on especially.
The introduction of the App Store and the retina display were real highlights.
However, Apple Maps is a real downer. These days, my frustration only seems to grow.
First and foremost – it fails regularly as a phone: dropped calls, constant line static, and taking eons just to connect to WiFi or 3G (I live in a city, by the way) with good coverage.
I keep good care of my phones, but I accept this might be something to do with the age of my phone – that is, if 15 months of use is considered “old” nowadays.
Ideally, I would usually have upgraded already after 12 months.
However, I didn’t upgrade to the iPhone 5 because as a 4S owner, I felt the leap wasn’t there.
I find the phone rather strange – long, thin with odd dimensions.
The finishes are nice, and I suppose an extra row of icons is handy – but aesthetics aside, I just didn’t feel any ‘draw’ whatsoever, which is definitely unusual for me since I’ve owned pretty much every iPhone iteration before it.
All these are personal preferences, I know – in an iPhone virgin’s eye, I’m sure the new iPhone would look and feel great.
So, in a nutshell, I think I’m possibly burned out by the iOS experience. Perhaps I like the idea of exploring greener pastures.
The drip feed of iOS updates just doesn’t seem to be keeping up the Jones’.
I find myself glancing jealously at Samsung’s Galaxy S4, all the Windows Phones with their live tiles, the Sony’s Xperia Z, the HTC One, hell, even the BlackBerry 10 – all of these have, in some way, brought the game to Apple.
Which is great, by the way.
Competition is very much encouraged in this space and its never been a better time to have options.
I am of course, firmly planted in the Apple ecosystem as is anyone who sticks with a device long enough.
There’s definitely a part of me really wants Apple to knock the ball out of the park with iPhone 6 or iOS 7 – just to make my decision to stay put easier.
Of course we still have to go through the terminal drudgery of the “5S” update first, which will further put back any miracle device for at least another year if Apple sticks to schedule.
My willpower will only erode further during this time, I think.
So anyone else in the same boat?
Feel free to have a whine in here with me.
